College Sport Cross Country North Western Zone
Tuesday, May 17, 2022
The grey and gloomy skies lingering over Massey’s Moire Park certainly did not reflect the buoyant mood of the Glenfield College distance running squad. It was the team’s first appearance at the North Western Zone Cross Country event and it will definitely not be their last.
All of the students showed tremendous resilience, especially after being a bit overwhelmed on arrival at the event where one boy stated, “Miss, Westlake has brought like our whole school here!” He was quickly reassured that the best things come in small packages. During our team talk we established that while we may not be the fastest team on the day, we could surely be the loudest, most supportive and most encouraging team – and that we were.
The shouting and cheering was at its loudest during Marius Nuttney’s sensational sprint at the finish line. He mowed down a Northcote rival in the last 200m, eventually beating him by 0.2 of a second. The exuberance continued when our very own James Newland and Sam Legg battled it out in another sprint at the end, with James triumphing by just 0.9 of a second.
Leading by example was Deputy Head Boy, Xavier Wetere, who without a doubt displayed the loudest voice of the day. He helped a new friend to the finish line and was humbled by students from other schools thanking him for his support.
At the prize giving our Intermediate Boys received a well-deserved second place for the six-man-team category, which just topped off an already rewarding and fulfilling day.
We’ll certainly be back next year, hopefully with blue skies and sunshine beating down and even more of the Glenfield College whānau taking to the track.
