During the second week of the holidays two year 13 Business Studies students attended the residential Massey University Business Boot Camp event at their Albany campus. Aaron Wilkens and Stephanie Rigg from Glenfield College joined seventy students from 38 secondary schools, from Doubtless Bay to Blenheim. Thanks to the course organisers from Massey University, Glenfield College students benefitted from talks by business leaders in some of New Zealand’s largest companies including Microsoft and Air New Zealand. Not only did a number of speakers visit the students at the university but every day the students were shuttled to various companies to see and hear first-hand how companies operate. “The program was superbly well organised and the insights we got were fantastic. I can apply some of what I learned in my course at school and the experience has opened my eyes to some possible career options in the years ahead” said Aaron Wilkens, an International Student from Germany. Encouraging students to work in groups and to reflect on what they have heard and seen during the day was also an important part of the course. So in addition to learning from first hand business leaders, the students also had the chance to develop essential business skills around teamwork, leadership and effective communication. “We are delighted to be associated with this wonderful program that Massey University have laid on again this year. It’s a huge undertaking to organise a residential programme on this scale but it does provide the students with an amazing learning opportunity”, Chris Hett, Head of Business Studies at Glenfield College.
